GATEWAY 2000 hosts luncheon for Secretary of Housing and Urban Development
Company announces donation to Neighborhood Networks in Kansas City

NORTH SIOUX CITY, SD, June 6, 1997 – Gateway 2000, Inc. (NYSE: GTW), a leading global marketer of PCs, today hosted a luncheon with Andrew Cuomo, Secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Cuomo came to Gateway to discuss HUD initiatives with a number of elected officials including Missouri Senator Christopher "Kit" Bond and Mayor Emanuel Cleaver II.

During the luncheon, Robert Spears, senior vice president of Gateway’s Americas Group, announced that the company was donating 15 computers and 15 hours of technical assistance to Neighborhood Networks in Kansas City. Neighborhood Networks is an initiative of HUD that uses computer technology to empower residents of HUD-insured and assisted housing in becoming more self-sufficient, employable, and economically self-reliant.

"Gateway cares about its employees and the communities in which we work, and we are pleased to make a contribution to this initiative," said Spears. "We look forward to assisting HUD in this worthwhile endeavor."

Gateway employs more than 1,000 people in Kansas City. The Kansas City facility, located in the West Bottoms/Stockyard area, houses telephone sales, customer service and technical support. The company recently announced plans to extend its major account sales operations to its Kansas City facility.

"Neighborhood Networks opens the door for lower-income Americans by providing the opportunity for them to learn computer skills, explore the information superhighway and train for today’s high-tech job market," said Secretary Cuomo.

"Gateway 2000’s gift today will directly help residents of HUD-assisted housing learn the skills they need to be productive participants in the next American century. No one knows better about productivity than Gateway 2000, a leading global marketer of personal computers. And today, Gateway 2000 has helped forge the path for many to become self-sufficient," continued Cuomo.

"I’m pleased at the civic commitment exhibited by Gateway 2000 in making this donation, and in the company’s willingness to host Senator Bond, Secretary Cuomo, and the Mayor’s Corps of Progress," said Mayor Cleaver. "Gateway 2000 has quickly become one of our best corporate citizens."
